Cosmo and the Robot by Brian Pinkney (2000)

This is a fun science fiction book about a boy named Cosmo and his robot/best friend, Rex. Living with his family on Mars, Cosmo is sad when Rex bumps his head and is a completely new robot. Discarding him at the dump, later Cosmo and his sister find Rex trying to hurt them, still the old changed Rex. Breaking him again, Cosmo is able to fix him with a handy-dandy tool set/ten "supersonic" attachments that help him navigate living in outer space, and voilá! Rex is back to himself. Life is happy for them all on Mars.

This would be a fun book to read to younger elementary age children. It shows uses of outer space, robots, and sticking together. Simple wordings with great, colorful illustrations.
